Similar to laser surgery, cryopexy uses intense cold to freeze the tissue around a retinal tear. This process creates a scar that secures the retina back in place. We often use this method for tears that are hard to reach with a laser.
For certain types of retinal detachment, an eye surgeon will inject a small bubble of air or gas into the centre of the eye. This bubble pushes the detached area of the retina back against the wall of the eye. The surgeon then uses a laser or freezing treatment to seal it.
In this procedure, a specialist sews a tiny piece of silicone onto the white of your eye (the sclera) over the affected area. This indents the wall of the eye, relieving the pulling force on the retina and allowing it to settle back into place.
A vitrectomy involves removing the vitreous gel that is pulling on the retina. The surgeon replaces the gel with air, gas, or liquid to hold the retina flat against the back of the eye. Over time, your body produces its own fluid to replace the gas or liquid.
For conditions like macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, we cannot “stitch” the retina back together. Instead, we use medicines injected directly into the eye. These injections stop the growth of abnormal blood vessels and reduce swelling, saving your vision from further decline.
While we have excellent tools to repair physical tears and detachments, reversing damage from dead retinal cells has always been a massive challenge. However, the future of eye care looks incredibly bright thanks to several new technologies.
Researchers are making huge strides in stem cell therapy. The goal is to grow healthy new retinal cells in a laboratory and transplant them into a damaged eye. These new cells could replace dead tissue, potentially restoring sight to patients with advanced macular degeneration or genetic diseases.
For patients with profound vision loss, scientists have developed artificial retinal implants.
