I am Dr. Advaith Sai Alampur, an eye doctor in India. I treat glaucoma patients every week. Many patients ask me one question first: “Doctor, how much will this cost?” In this blog, I answer that question in plain and simple words.
Quick Summary
Glaucoma treatment in India costs much less than in the USA, UK, or other Western countries. Here is a short summary:
Now let me explain each part in detail.

The average cost of glaucoma treatment in India is between ₹45,000 and ₹1,00,000. This is the full cost, including tests, medicine, and one procedure.
I tell my patients that this number is just a starting point. Your actual cost depends on whether you need only eye drops, or laser, or surgery.
Simple cost range table:
Eye drops are the first line of treatment for most glaucoma patients. In my clinic, I usually start new patients on eye drops before thinking about surgery.
I always tell patients: never stop your drops on your own, even if the drop feels expensive. Stopping suddenly can raise eye pressure fast and harm your vision.
Laser treatment is used when drops alone are not enough. It is a short, walk-in procedure.
In my experience, laser works very well for patients caught in the early or middle stage of glaucoma. It is cheaper than surgery and has a fast recovery.
Surgery is needed when drops and laser cannot control the eye pressure. There are different types of glaucoma surgery, and the cost changes with the type.
These prices are for one eye. If both eyes need surgery, the cost roughly doubles, though many hospitals give a small discount for the second eye.
Patients often ask me if the cost is different from city to city. Yes, it is. Big metro cities usually cost a little more because of higher hospital rent, staff salary, and equipment cost.
Smaller cities are usually more affordable. Below is an approximate price range for glaucoma surgery (per eye) in 20 major Indian cities. These are indicative ranges, not fixed prices, so please confirm with your local hospital.
In my own experience, the lower end of these ranges is usually laser treatment or basic trabeculectomy, while the higher end is for advanced options like MIGS or drainage implant surgery with a premium device.
Many patients ask me why the cost is different from one hospital to another. Here are the main reasons:
Yes, in most cases. Glaucoma surgery is usually covered under health insurance in India, as it is treated as a medical necessity, not a cosmetic procedure.
However, coverage for eye drops and routine check-ups is often not included.
Before your surgery, I always tell patients to check three things with their insurance company:
Glaucoma treatment in India can cost 5 to 10 times less than the same treatment in the USA, UK, or Gulf countries. This is one reason many international patients travel to India for eye care.
Reasons for the lower cost:
I remember a patient, a 58-year-old man from a small town, who came to me with blurred side vision. He had never checked his eye pressure before.
His glaucoma was already in a moderate stage. We started him on two types of eye drops, costing him about ₹500 a month.
After six months, his eye pressure was still high, so we did a laser treatment for around ₹20,000. His pressure came under control, and he did not need surgery.
I share this case because it shows something important: early detection saves money and saves vision. If he had come to me two years earlier, drops alone may have been enough, and his total cost would have been much lower.
Here are some simple ways I suggest to my patients to manage the cost better:
Glaucoma often has no early symptoms. This is why I tell every patient above the age of 40 to get an eye pressure check once a year, even without any pain or vision problem. See a doctor sooner if you notice:
Early diagnosis is the single biggest factor that keeps your glaucoma treatment cost low and protects your vision for life.
This blog is written for general awareness. Actual treatment cost and choice of procedure depend on your individual eye condition. Please visit an eye doctor for a personal diagnosis and treatment plan.
